Far-Infrared Therapy
What is Far-Infrared and Far-Infrared Therapy
Far-Infrared (FIR) lies at a range of 3-100 μm with respect to the complete electromagnetic radiation spectrum. (1) Far-infrared Therapy is the practice of applying far-infrared heat to specific areas of the body. At Vega Therapy Services, we use FDA approved medical device grade far-infrared heating mats.
Benefits of Far-Infrared Therapy
FIR therapy is commonly used to facilitate the temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain. FIR works by increasing the temperature of the soft tissues of the body, which may help increase local circulation. Heat, in general, is thought to help stimulate healing, far-infrared is a superior method of applying heat. FIR rays typically penetrate 1.5-2 inches below the surface level of the skin, allowing for a deeper healing effect.
FIR therapy can help manage some of the symptoms associated with chronic muscular back pain. (2) In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, FIR therapy has been shown to be effective for reducing low back pain and by decreasing the overall level of experienced pain. (3)
Researchers at Japan’s Nishi Kyusyu University found that infrared sauna heat therapy can have a significant impact on chronic pain sufferers’ overall well-being and ability to function. Their research indicates that consistent daily thermal Therapy (including FIR therapy) has promising benefits for people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia. FIR therapy can support your efforts to improve your energy levels and minimize minor aches and pains associated with CFS and fibromyalgia. Furthermore, FIR rays can exert protective effects on the cardiovascular system reducing risks for cardiovascular disease. FIR may also help improve kidney function, decrease fatigue, improve immune function, and reduce oxidative stress. (4)
Whether you are suffering from pain or overall sickness, FIR therapy can help restore your wellness and promote a greater sense of well-being.
Who is Far-Infrared Therapy For?
FIR therapy is for everyone from sedentary to athletic but is most beneficial in those with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and those in pain. Those that are pregnant, have a pace-maker, or are sensitive to heat should consult with a physician to see if Far-Infrared Therapy is advisable.
*Client appointments for both of Integrative Functional Manual Therapy and Red Light Therapy appointments include Far-Infrared Therapy unless contraindicated.
